Tray Numbers help you stay organized when you pick multiple orders at once.

If you use batch or wave picking, you’re usually grabbing the same SKUs for multiple orders on a single trip. Tray Numbers let you sort items into the correct order tray while you pick, so you spend less time separating items later at the packing station.

What Tray Numbers are

When you print a Pick List and/or Packing Lists for a set of orders, Ordoro can assign a unique number to each order in that print job. That number is the Tray Number.

Tray Numbers start at 1 and increase by 1 for each order included in that batch.

When Tray Numbers are helpful

Tray Numbers are a good fit if you:

  • Pick multiple orders in one run (batch picking or wave picking).
  • Use a picking cart with multiple bins, totes, or trays.
  • Pick in zones or aisles and want to keep partially picked orders organized as you move through the warehouse.
  • Want to place items into the correct order bin while picking.
  • Want to reduce sorting at the packing station.

Where Tray Numbers show up

When Tray Numbers are enabled, they show up in both places below.

Packing Lists

  • Each order’s Packing List shows that order’s Tray Number.
  • Many teams place the printed Packing List into the matching tray before they start picking.

Pick List

  • The Pick List shows Tray Numbers on each SKU line when that SKU is included in an order.
  • Ordoro also breaks out quantities by tray, so you can see how many of that SKU belong in each tray.

How to print Tray Numbers

  1. Go to the Orders page and select the orders you’re fulfilling.
  2. Click Print and choose Pick/Pack List.
  3. Turn on Display Order Tray Numbers.
  4. Choose what you want to print.
    • Pick List.
    • Packing Lists.
    • Both.
  5. Click View/Print to generate the PDF.

Common workflow: tote cart picking

A common workflow looks like this.

  1. Set up your cart with totes or trays labeled 1 through N. (N is the number of orders you selected).
  2. Select up to N orders in Ordoro (for example, 12 orders for a 12-tote cart).
  3. Print a Pick List with Display Order Tray Numbers turned on.
  4. If you also print Packing Lists, place each Packing List into the matching tote before you start picking.
  5. Use the Pick List as you pick through each zone.
    • When you pick a SKU, use the Tray Numbers on that line to place the correct quantity into the correct tote.
  6. When you bring the cart to the packing station, each tote should already be sorted by order.

Best practices

  • Match Tray Numbers to your physical setup. Label totes or trays 1 through N before you start.
  • Keep your batch size aligned with your cart capacity. This makes it easier to stay organized.
  • Print Packing Lists if you want a paper slip to travel with each tote.
  • Tray Numbers work well with kits. The Tray Numbers stay consistent whether you show kit components on the Pick List or not.

Notes and limitations

  • Tray Numbers are assigned automatically for that print job. You can’t manually assign a tray number to a specific order.
  • Tray Numbers are unique to the set of orders you selected for that print. If you print a different batch, the numbering may be different.
  • Tray Numbers work whether you print the Pick List, the Packing Lists, or both.
